Throughout
the site we have emphasised the extreme importance of cue
ball control. This is especially important around the black,
the area of the table that most large breaks are compiled
from.
Large
breaks can also be made around the pink but tend to involve
a higher degree of positional and potting accuracy.
Players
favour the black because it is the highest scoring ball on
the table and also
because it is ideally positioned for break building.
The
fact that the black is close to the top pockets, the top cushion
and often the majority of the reds, makes it the perfect colour
for maintaining position when compiling breaks.
The
top cushion is used continuously by the best players when
break building. Players will attempt to gain the correct potting
angle on the black and then use the top cushion to obtain
ideal position on a red.
In
this way the red-colour sequence is managed throughout the
break.
Top
players have an eye on the black ball at all times and will
often try and bring it into play if it is surrounded.
The
blue and pink balls will inevitably feature somewhere in the
majority of breaks made. The baulk colours however, are almost
exclusively used as a stop gap position for keeping a break
going and are rarely used for the bulk of points scored.
Stay
around the black if you wish to make big breaks. Simple as
that!
